Introduction

The Basics of BIM course provides a high-level overview of the business case for BIM and what BIM is.

The Basics of BIM is aimed as an introduction for those attending the Essentials of BIM, incorporating ISO 19650, as well as for those who need to understand the business case and drivers which are requiring Building Information Modelling and Information Management as a method of supporting industry objectives, such as Construction 4.0, digital twins, and the golden thread.

Construction needs to improve. Drivers, research, and industry reports have highlighted for decades the why, and how, AEC needs to get better. BIM was offered as a solution and the decade from 2011 to 2021 saw the rise of fall of BIM Level 2.

But many questions remain:

  • But what is BIM and what does it mean?
  • What are the latest requirements and developments driving the AEC industry to change and adopt BIM?
  • What are the key international standards which are facilitating this change?

By completing this course, the answers to these questions will become clear.

Key learning objectives

Unit 1 The Business Case for BIM

At the end of the Unit you will be able to:

  • Define the global drivers which led to BIM adoption;
  • Understand the requirement for change with the AEC Industry;
  • Summarize findings of key industry reports;
  • Summarize findings relating to key industry case studies;
  • Understand the origin of the UK BIM Level 2 mandate; and
  • Describe the UK Construction Alignment to BIM Level 2.
     

Unit 2 What is BIM?

At the end of the Unit you will be able to:

  • Express Outline the difference between BIM, BIM, & BIM;
  • Define what constitutes an information model;
  • Recognise and define the key BIM terminology;
  • Identify the industry adopted BIM dimensions;
  • Identify the difference between the process and deliverable requirements; and
  • Recognise the need for deliverables to identify the process from which they were developed.

 

Course preparation

No previous experience or training regarding BIM is required.
