ISO 9001 is changing: Here’s what you need to know

ISO 9001, the world’s most recognised quality management system standard, is being revised.

The process is already underway, with the Draft International Standard (DIS) expected in June 2025 and full publication anticipated in the second half of 2026.

While we don’t yet know the full scope of the changes, what we do know is that this update will have implications for all certified organisations. Early signals point to greater emphasis on enhanced risk management, supply chain oversight, emerging technologies and themes such as ethics and integrity. Getting ahead now means you’ll be ready to respond with confidence.

Why it matters

ISO 9001 sits at the heart of quality assurance and operational effectiveness for organisations around the world. The revision is part of a regular review process to keep the standard relevant in a changing world – one shaped by digital transformation, evolving stakeholder expectations and increasing focus on risk, resilience and continual improvement.

Whether you use ISO 9001 on its own or as part of an integrated management system, the upcoming transition offers a valuable opportunity to assess, strengthen and futureproof your approach to quality. With revisions to ISO 14001 already underway and updates to ISO 45001 expected in 2027, now is the ideal time to start preparing for your transition and take a more strategic view of your overall management system.
