The world’s most widely adopted management system standards – ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 – are all in the process of being revised.
The world’s most widely adopted management system standards – ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 – are all in the process of being revised. While we don’t yet know the exact scope of the changes, what we do know is that all three are likely to transition within a similar timeframe and all three standards will be more closely aligned to the latest version of Annex SL, the ISO harmonised structure for Management System Standards. That makes now the right time to get informed, get organised and get ready.
What’s changing?
ISO 14001 is furthest along. The Draft International Standard (DIS) is due to be released in May 2025, and the final version is expected to be published in January 2026. Once that happens, a formal transition period will begin, giving certified organisations time to align their environmental management systems with the updated standard. Find out more about the proposed changes to ISO 14001 here.
ISO 9001 is following closely behind. Its DIS is due in June 2025, with full publication expected later in 2026. While the content of the revision is still being finalised, as the Committee Draft has been referred back to the Working Group, it’s clear that updates are coming that will require attention and planning. Find out more about the ISO 9001 update.
ISO 45001 is earlier in the process, with the next Working Group meeting scheduled for May 2025. A publication date hasn’t been confirmed, but it is likely to be in the second half of 2027. Find out more.
